Several studies have explored the effects of Omega-3 fatty acids (PUFAs) in three major, psychiatric disorders: Autism, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity disorder and Psychosis. It was found that omega-3s demonstrated a sufficient effect thtat they may be tried as adjuncts to other therapies, but not as a replacement for current pharmacological interventions. Omega-3 levels may reach a steady state after six months and at least four months is needed to demonstrate an effect on cognitive performance. Even longer study periods of one year might be needed to demonstrate behavioral changes in response to omega-3 supplementation
